Serving Gantt

Gantt's 1960s canopy is aging out together. We sequence removals, work around manufactured-home lots, and haul what no district collection will take.

Greenville Tree Removal Team has handled tree removal in Gantt for more than twenty years, and the most useful thing we bring to an address here is an order of operations: which tree comes down this season, which one waits, and which one never needed to come down at all.

Every estimate is free, and every estimate is written down before a saw runs. The trunk rounds, the stump, the grindings and the chips are each named as included or excluded, so nothing about the finished yard is a surprise. When a tree can be cabled, braced or pruned instead of removed, we say so and we price that option beside the removal, because a homeowner choosing between the two is entitled to both numbers.

We also settle two questions before quoting anything: who has authority over the address, and who serves it with power. Neither answer is the obvious one in this part of the county, and both of them change the job more than the tree does. Hauling is the third question, and here it has only one answer.

Why Gantt Trees Come Due on the Same Schedule

Worker latching the tailboard on a load of post oak rounds at a Gantt county road frontage, nothing left at the road.

The housing stock is not spread evenly across the twentieth century. Of 5,863 housing units, 1,765 of them, or 30.1%, were built between 1960 and 1969 — the largest single-decade concentration in the place — and 3,488 units, 59.5% of the stock, were built before 1980. Whole streets went up inside one ten-year window.

Yards went in with the houses. A shade tree planted when a 1960s subdivision was finished is roughly six decades old now, and the species that reach that age on this ground are at or past the end of their useful service life. That is why trouble here arrives as a cohort rather than as an isolated event: one tree fails, and the four on either side of it are the same age, the same species and the same size class.

Reading a street, not a tree

When we are called out for a single tree on a 1960s block, we read the rest of the row while we are standing there. What we are looking at is structural — co-dominant stems with included bark at the union, a conk at the base, a root flare buried under sixty years of added grade, deadwood scattered through the upper crown instead of the shaded interior. Diameter at breast height gives us the size class and a Level 2 basic tree risk assessment gives us the ranking. The written tree condition report that comes out of it is something you can hand to a neighbor or an insurance adjuster later.

Sequencing a yard instead of reacting to it

A cohort does not have to be removed as a cohort. The point of walking the whole property once is to put the trees in an order: one removed this year because it stands over the roof, one crown-cleaned or cabled to buy several more years, one left alone. Spread across seasons, the same work costs less than an emergency crew at storm rates, and it keeps a yard from going bare in one afternoon.

Ash is where we push the schedule forward instead. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Greenville County since 2017, so an ash in this stock is a declining-species question rather than a hypothetical one, and a dead ash is a more brittle, more expensive removal than the same tree taken while it still holds together.

Stump work is governed by what is under the yard. Gantt sits in the Southern Outer Piedmont, and these are Piedmont ultisols carrying quartz gravel in the top horizon. For a tracked stump grinder that matters more than depth does: teeth wear on the gravel, and grinder wear rather than how far down the root plate runs is what sets the pace of the work.

Removals in a Manufactured-Home Community

Mobile homes are 20.0% of Gantt’s occupied housing units, a share large enough that manufactured-home work is ordinary here rather than an occasional exception. A removal on one of those lots is not a smaller version of a subdivision removal; it is a different job, and it differs on three counts. We price it as its own kind of work from the first site visit.

The first is geometry. Pads sit close together along narrow interior lanes, setbacks are short, and there is often nowhere within reach of the tree to set a chipper, let alone build a crane pad. Compact tracked equipment that fits through a gate exists for exactly this situation; where even that will not reach, the work becomes rigging every piece out to a lane, which is slower and belongs in the quote rather than in a discovery halfway through the day.

The second is the structure under the tree. A manufactured home has no framed roof deck, so a limb that a stick-built roof would absorb can come through the ceiling of a unit. That changes how we rank an overhanging limb — not the method we use to take it down, but how far up the list it goes.

The third is who is buying. On a rented pad the tree and the home usually have different owners, and the resident who called us may not be the party who can authorize the work. We would rather establish that in the first ten minutes than at the end of an estimate.

Service drops cross the lanes here

Drops run across interior lanes at low height in these communities, and we check which utility serves the specific address before quoting anything near a conductor. Duke Energy Carolinas is the investor-owned utility serving the Greenville metropolitan area, Gantt included, but we do not read that off a pole — Laurens Electric Cooperative also serves parts of Greenville County, and the two are not the same phone call. Our rigging and line-clearance practice follows the ANSI Z133 safety requirements, including the weather limits that stop work near energized conductors.

White Horse Road and the interstate frontage

Much of the area’s manufactured housing sits along the White Horse Road and Old Piedmont Highway corridors, and White Horse Road is US Route 25. Interstate 85 runs through the middle of the place at exits 44 through 46. On a parcel with that frontage the limiting factor is traffic control rather than rigging: the drop zone is a travel lane, the lane belongs to a highway, and the job gets planned around the road before it is planned around the tree.

There Is No Gantt City Hall — There Are Districts

Gantt is a census-designated place, not a municipality. There is no mayor, no council, no city hall and no municipal code, which means there is no local tree ordinance to comply with and no city crew coming for the brush. Homeowners who moved here from inside a city limit are usually surprised in both directions at once.

What exists instead is a set of special purpose districts. Greenville County’s own roster of fire and special purpose districts names the Gantt Fire District alongside a dozen or more neighbors, among them Belmont, Berea Public Service District, Brookfield, Canebrake, Duncan Chapel, Glassy Mountain, Lake Cunningham, North Greenville, Parker District and Piedmont Park. Which body answers an unincorporated address is decided by district boundary, not by which city happens to be closest.

The Gantt District Fire Department describes itself as a division of the Gantt Fire, Sewer and Police District, formed in 1954 and located in the southern part of Greenville County. Its station stands at 1201 White Horse Road and covers the Donaldson, Belle Meade, Belmont, Carolina, Chesnut Hills, Grove, Royal Oaks, Southside and Mount Pleasant precincts among others. When a clearing job is large enough to raise a land disturbance question, the authority is the Greenville County Land Development Division.

Burning is a state notification, and it applies because you are unincorporated

South Carolina requires notifying the Forestry Commission before an outdoor burn, and that requirement applies only to the unincorporated areas of the state — which is to say it applies here. It covers leaves, limbs and branches, and it expressly covers land-clearing burns. Sitting outside a city is not the absence of a rule; it is a different rule, administered from a different desk.

What a tree license means in South Carolina, which is nothing

South Carolina issues no arborist license and no tree contractor license, so nobody working in unincorporated Greenville County holds one. We say that plainly instead of dressing it up, and we would treat a company that claims a state tree credential as having told you something untrue in its first sentence. Insurance and workers’ compensation certificates are the documents that actually exist behind a crew. Ask to see those, and ask us for ours.

What Greater Greenville Sanitation Will and Will Not Take

The Greater Greenville Sanitation District was created by the state legislature in 1968 as a special purpose district collecting non-hazardous solid waste in unincorporated areas of the county, and press coverage puts its served population at roughly 60,000 people. Not every Gantt address is inside it. The district has a boundary and a formal annexation process — its own description calls annexation the process by which it expands its boundaries into adjacent areas so as to provide services — and in May 2025 state lawmakers passed a bill restricting its service area for four years. Being unincorporated does not put a parcel in the district by itself.

Where the district does serve, it says its services are funded by a combination of both the sanitation fee and a millage that appears on the annual tax statement: a published $210 per residential structure, at a millage rate of .0149.

The six-inch cap sits below the smallest thing a removal makes

The green waste rule is that tree waste may not be larger than 6 feet in length and 6 inches in diameter. Every trunk section a removal produces is thicker than that. There is no version of a whole-tree removal whose wood goes to the curb, at any price, on any schedule, in any week of the year.

Contractor debris is ours by rule, not by courtesy

The district’s exclusion is explicit: it is unlawful for a contractor, business or non-residential property to place such debris for residential collection, and a contractor who cuts or trims trees for hire has to take the resulting debris off the premises and provide for lawful disposal of it. Hauling is therefore not a line item a customer can decline to save money — it becomes our obligation at the first cut. What we do with that is price disposal for the county the job is actually in, since one gate charges by the cubic yard, the next by the ton, and a couple of them are free only to their own residents.

Seasonal leaf collection is the piece residents still use directly. The district runs a loose-leaf season from November through February with crews cycling through more than once, leaves placed loose in the curb lane about a foot into the street, and no garbage stacked on or mixed into the pile. That is a rake-and-haul service for yard cleanup, not an outlet for a removal, and knowing the difference before the quote is what keeps the two from being confused at the end of the job.
